The Department of Kinesiology and Rehabilitation Science (KRS) in the College of Education offers a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) degree program accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE). A professional preparation curriculum is provided for students who wish to teach physical education in grades K-12 and health education in grades 6-12. This program prepares professionals who are concerned with the acquisition and transmission of knowledge that contributes to the growth, development, health, fitness and wellness, and lifelong physical activity and motor performance of all individuals.

Admissions Requirements

Students interested in the B.Ed. program in physical education and health education must meet admission requirements of the College of Education.

  • Complete University of Hawai'i General Education core and KRS core courses (KRS 181, 182, 203, & 270) which serve as pre-requisites to this program of study.
  • Minimum GPA of 2.75 with at least 40 hours of documented experience with children in various settings.
  • Successful completion of the PRAXIS I exam
  • Interview
  • Students should apply for acceptance into the College after completing the General Education core and during the second semester of taking KRS core courses.
  • The PRAXIS II components required for licensure in Hawai`i must be taken prior to the teaching residencies (elementary and secondary).
  • Departmental advising is strongly recommended as soon as students have decided on teaching as an area of emphasis. Both physical education and health education comprise this program of study; one area cannot be chosen over the other.
  • Students must have a genuine desire to work with children and youth, and demonstrate appropriate dispositions relative to Character, Work Ethic, and Respect.

Program Requirements

After admission to the College of Education and the successful completion of major and related courses, the student must complete the Professional Core of 42 credits. The minimum total number of credits required for graduation is 138 and a GPA of 2.75 must be maintained for approval for student teaching and for graduation from the College of Education.
 
The student who majors in this program of study must demonstrate competence in motor skills and comprehensive knowledge relative to content in health and physical education as well as effective teaching strategies, National and state standards, diversity issues, assessment, and accountability.
