The Bachelor's in Education (BEd) program in Elementary and Early Childhood Education (EECE) qualifies graduates to teach in elementary school (K-6), with the option of dual-preparation in Early Childhood Education or Special Education.
 
Teacher candidates complete a minimum of 124 credit hours:

  • UHM General Education Core for education majors or an AA degree
  • Elementary education emphasis, 17-18 credits
  • Foundations and methods courses in elementary education, 30 credits
  • Field experience and student teaching, 21 credits

Elementary Education Emphasis (17-18 credits)

Teacher candidates are strongly advised to schedule the following four courses, with the help of OSAS advisors, before starting the cohort program:*

  • EDEP 310 - Education in American Society (3)
  • EDEP 311 - Psychological Foundations (3)
  • ITE/EDEP 360 - Introduction to Multicultural Education (3)
  • Arts or Movement Elective (2-3)

Teacher candidates schedule the following two courses, with the help of OSAS advisors, during the cohort program in semester II or III or in summer between semesters II and III. Students should not take these courses before starting the cohort program:*

  • SPED 444 - Educating Exceptional Students in Regular Classrooms (3)**
  • ETEC elective - Choose one from 414, 430, 442 or 448 (3)

Professional Education Core (51 credits):

Teacher candidates take these courses as part of the cohort program. Courses are block-scheduled, and registration information is provided to candidates each semester.
