The following application procedures apply to the three options available in the BEd Elementary program:
- Bachelor of Education in Elementary Education (Second Baccalaureate option available)
- Dual Preparation in Elementary & Early Childhood Education
- Dual Preparation in Elementary & Special Education
Applications for B.Ed. in Elementary Education
Applications for the B.Ed. in Elementary Education are accepted for Fall admission only.
Applications are now being accepted for Fall 2010 BEd in Elementary Education. We're still accepting applications for the Statewide program until the program is full. Other BEd Elementary programs priority deadline February 1, 2010 and final deadline March 1, 2010.
Applications are accepted on a space available basis only. Applicants must be prepared to take more than 12 credit hours of course work per semester. They also may need to enroll in summer classes if they are to complete the program within four semesters.
Admission Requirements for Bachelors in Elementary Education (BEd)
- A minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.75 from all post-secondary institutions attended. Applicants who do not meet the GPA criterion to the College of Education (COE) should consult with an academic advisor as soon as possible.
- Applicants must achieve a minimal composite score of 516 in the reading, writing, and mathematics subtests of the Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST) or Computerized Pre-Professional Skils Test (C-PPST) of the PRAXIS series with a minimum score of 170 in each subtest. For registration information, visit the PRAXIS website or contact the UHM Testing office, (ph: 956-3454) for information on registering for the computerized pre-professional skills test (C-PPST). Students must request that all PRAXIS scores be sent to the Hawai‘i Teacher Standards Board (HTSB) and to the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa.
- Applicants must complete a minimum of 40 hours of current (within the past five years) group leadership involvement with elementary-aged children. Such “field experience(s)” may be completed on either a paid or voluntary basis. It is highly recommended that the field experience(s) span a period of at least two semesters. Applicants are required to submit official documentation on letterhead from their place of field work or use the OSAS Group Leadership Field Experience Form (included in Applications Instructions, see above) as signatures are required.
- Applicants must demonstrate oral and non-verbal communicative competence through the successful completion of a Personal Admissions Interview(s). The purpose of the interview is to assess fluency and intelligibility of oral communication, interest in teaching, student motivation, and suitability to the profession.
- For Elementary undergraduate applicants:
- Applicants must complete 55 transferable credits or be in the process of completing 55 transferable credits at the time of their application. Fifty-five (55) credits and the College of Education Pre-Education Core requirements must be completed prior to the start of the Professional Education Core.
- Applicants who have completed an articulated Associates of Arts (AA) degree from a UH Community College are considered to have met the College of Education Pre-Education Core requirements with the exception of:
- (1) MUS 253 or any UHM approved Arts (DA) course,
- (2) MATH 111 & MATH 112
- For Elementary Second Baccalaureate applicants:
- The following courses are required prior to starting the Professional Education Core:
- (1) MUS 253 or any UHM approved Arts (DA) course,
- Applicants must have graduated from an accredited and UHM-recognized four-year institution of higher education
