With the encouragement of University of Hawai‘i at Manoa Chancellor Virginia Hinshaw for faculty and staff to donate their time and labor to improving campus facilities, the faculty and staff of the Center on Disability Studies (CDS) painted the outside of three temporary buildings located at the College of Education (COE). The chancellor’s “Manoa Makeover Team” is a campus-wide effort to reduce costs in a time of budgetary crisis.

Wearing bright green “Manoa Makeover Team” t-shirts provided by the chancellor’s office, CDS volunteers painted for two weekends, using their own painting supplies. The exterior paint was donated by UHM’s buildings and grounds management office.

According to Associate Director of CDS, Jean Johnson, “These buildings, constructed in 1967, had not been painted in more than twenty years.” CDS is especially proud of their vibrantly-colored doors. New signs and room numbers have been added to ensure that students and members of the public can easily locate the offices. The next “Manoa Makeover” project for CDS will be to add landscaping to that area of the campus.
